What is the Birmingham MPO?

The Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is the group of local, elected officials, transit operators, and state officials who are responsible for transportation planning throughout the Birmingham metropolitan area. This includes portions of the Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair Counties. The Birmingham MPO decides, in cooperation with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), what transportation projects are funded with the available local, state and federal dollars.

Meetings of the Birmingham MPO and its advisory committees are open to the public and anyone is welcome to attend. The MPO is staffed by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB). A map of the Birmingham MPO region is provided on the back of this page.
